A woman revealed a single text message on her husband’s phone destroyed their marriage by confirming he was ‘betraying’ her – just not in the way she had suspected.
She explains that she had been determined to make their relationship work and keep the family together for their two-year-old child, forgiving her husband for instances which included throwing a glass of wine in her face, and calling her “pathetic and lazy” when she begged him, crying, to look after their son and allow her to sleep in “just once”.
But one morning, after her husband had been out with friends and slept in the spare room, the mum looked at the text messages pinging on his phone while he was in the shower and said in that moment she realised she had to leave.
He had been out for friend’s birthday and jumped in the shower before saying hello to his wife and child, meaning it had been 24 hours since he had seen either of them, Kidspot reports.
The mum said it infuriated her that it would take serious organisation for her to be “out of the picture” for 24 hours, but he just did it, with zero discussion.
“But no matter how many millions of times we argued about his lack of communication and involvement, nothing ever changed,” she said.
“So when I heard his phone pinging repeatedly when he was showering, I wanted to see what was going on. By that stage, I suspected he’d been cheating on me.
“He was betraying me, but in an unexpected way.
“I opened the group chat and saw a discussion with his mates about drinks that night. But my husband’s last reply left me cold. ‘Don’t think I can make it tonight. SWMBO will say no.’
“What was SWMBO? I assumed it was me, and I assumed it was mean. I wasn’t wrong.
“‘She Who Must Be Obeyed,’ he told me calmly when I asked him as soon as he stepped out of the shower.
“I’ll never forget that look of defiance on his face. No remorse. No apology. I felt like I’d been slapped across the face.”
She says she felt mortified as his friends replied ‘LOL’ and with laughing emojis, proving they had heard the nickname before and knew exactly what it meant.
The woman said it struck her “like a lightning bolt” that he did not deserve her or their son, and was treating their home like a hotel.
“I’d put up with this s*** for too long,” she added. “We deserved so much more – and would be better off on our own.
“My toddler and I were out of there within a week. Since then, he’s never forgiven me for ‘taking my son away’ from him. The son whom he lived with, but barely saw.”
